A note on new gears. I
know you want to but don't!
We have been doing a lot of gears lately and what I have been seeing
is that some are not giving them time to break in.
This is critical on new gears
and even more so on a set of used gears. This is why,
New gears are made and heat treated in a sets. When set up for the
first time they need to ware into each other, this in return work
hardens the teethes contact pattern. It takes time and to much stress
early on can make the gears brittle, damaged from friction or oil
break down. That’s why the oil needs to be changed no more then the
first 500 miles. Used gears already have a work hardened pattern which
we try are best to mach as close as possible. You have to give these time to reestablish there
pattern or again the heat from the friction will causes the gears to
become brittle.
The rules after a gear install must be followed to preserve their
life.
No hard or fast acceleration, compression breaking or down
shifting.
Stop after 15-20 minuets of driving and fully let the diff and axle
cool before driving again.
No towing before the brake in period.
Light towing, less then 15 miles and letting diff fully cool before
continuing for the first 50 towing miles.
No racing, high speeds or off-roading of any sort.
Check torque on wheels after 50 miles and 150 miles.
Pull diff cover after the first 500 miles to change the oil and
inspect the gears for sings of ware. Do not just pump the fluid out
this leaves metal particles and phosphorus coating from the gears in
the diff when you refill it. This contaminates the gear oil and is
just about as good as not changing it at all. This will also destroys
bearings and seals very fast.
Warrantees of gears are though the manufacture; thus used gear set-ups
are not covered. Any heavy use or overloading during the first 500
miles will cause irreparable damage to the gear set that can be
determined by inspection of gear set and will not be warranted by the
manufacture. If there has been know heavy use or neglect to gears,
warrantees will not be tried. We are trying to
save you from the heartache and pain from destroying your gears. If it
is clear to us that we screwed up beyond a shadow of doubt we will fix
it.
I hope this helps, holeski
