The two types of synthetic fairleads
where discontinued due to production costs and has nothing to do with
quality.
The Nylatron is a much harder material than the UHMW-PE
and has a much slower wear rate. The Nylatron can also be
used with wire rope as well as synthetic, which is recommended. The UHMW-PE is similar to
most materials used in making cutting boards. This is also the
same stuff that most synthetic ropes are made of and when
used together have next to a zero wear rate. The UHMW-PE is much softer
than Nylatron and has a different radius bevel, as
not to break on hard pulls.
I used the UHMW-PE (white) fairlead for over a year with
steel wire rope. I had no problems until I made a pull
straight under and behind my YJ. There was some wear but
it did not cut though. The Nylatron (black) Fairleads are
holding up great with both synthetic ropes and wire ropes and we have
had no complaints.
